PSA question after blood test?!?

MY DAD HAD A BLOOD TEST AND URINE SCREENING. IN THE RESULTS, THE PSA IS 1.03. THE REFERENCE VALUES ARE 0-4.0. WHAT IS PSA? IS MY DAD’S PSA NORMAL?

psa is an abbrevation for prostatic specific antigen.;..used for screening in combination with a digital rectal exam to check for prostate cancer….your dad’s lab results are great,no need to worry…
psa is a blood test which detects the antigen secreted by the prostate…elevations/mild are not always cancer as it can be inflammation…etc

    yes, his PSA is normal. PSA is Prostate Specific Antigen… it screens for prostate cancer.

    PSA or prostate specific antigen is an enzyme produced by the prostate cells. PSA levels can be used to tell if you have prostate-related diseases, such as prostate cancer. As part of a general prostate health program, your doctor may recommend that you have a PSA blood test performed regularly.

    Doctors use PSA, along with other information, to measure your prostate health. A high PSA level can be a sign of prostate cancer. However there are other conditions that cause an increased PSA. Enlarging Prostate, prostate cancer, and prostatitis are the most common reasons for a high PSA. While a high PSA does not always mean prostate cancer, your doctor will want to be sure that you do not have it.

    If you have a PSA score of higher than 4.0, your doctor will probably recommend follow-up tests to rule out prostate cancer. Your doctor will continue to measure your PSA level for some period of time in order to track any unusual or sudden change in levels. Some men may have trouble urinating because of an enlarging prostate. For them PSA levels higher than 1.5 can mean that the prostate is continuing to enlarge. If so, you are at increased risk that your urinary symptoms will continue to get worse.

    You may also suffer what is called acute urinary retention (AUR), which means that you have a sudden inability to urinate. This requires having a catheter inserted to allow you to urinate. Eventually, you have to have surgery to correct this condition. Please talk to your doctor to discuss the results of your PSA exam.

    PSA is Protein Specific Antigen, I believe. A PSA of 1.03 is GREAT! (His physician should have said so). Good for your dad in getting a PSA. His physician should tell him how often to get them in the future. Another important factor is how much the PSA changes, if any, so having a baseline PSA is very good.
