PSA stands for prostate specific antigen. It is elevated in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia and in prostatic cancer.

This test is given to men who might be at risk of prostate cancer. However, there is much debate about it’s accuracy. Given too early in life (before age 40) you will get many false positives. Even in older men, the test has to be repeated, and then a biopsy must be taken to determine if the test was actually indicating a problem.

It is a basic diagnostic tool, but the results on their own only indicate a potentially elevated risk, not an actual problem.
